Publications

  • Women account for 60 to 80% of smallholder farmers in the developing world. Yet in sub-Saharan Africa, only 15% of landholders are women, and they receive less than 10% of credit and 7% of extension services. Policies that address gender inequalities could lift 150 million people out of hunger. How can women be empowered to make this estimation a reality?
  • Since 1992, Ghana's University for Development Studies is encouraging students to work with farmers and learn from them. The motto 'Knowledge for development' has been taken since as a central value for all researchers and students of the institute.
  • Regional VERCON Network is a web-based integrated, multilingual regional information and communication system. It enables access, exchange and disseminates information, knowledge, experience and innovations among agricultural researchers and advisory services, extension agents, small farmers, farmers’ groups, non-governmental organizations, private and public agricultural service suppliers, communication professionals and the media, such as rural radio stations.
  • Food insecurity occurs when people do not have access to food. According to FAO’s statistics, food insecurity mostly takes place in rural areas. Community radio encompasses one of the most widely used medium for disseminating information to rural audiences across Africa. Moreover, radios are able to reach communities who live in areas without phones or electricity, as well as people who cannot read or write. Rural radio can therefore be effectively applied as a tool to tackle food insecurity issues.
  • OVOP Gambia Project
    Strengthening the agricultural sector increase local food security and economic development. Most of West African small farmers face challenges in food production caused by weak market links. The Food Security through Commercialization of Agriculture (FSCA) project was implemented by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) with funding from the Italian Government. Its aim was to advance rural development and food security through the enhancement of capacity- building of farmer-based organization in seven countries of West Africa.
