  • DrumNet: linking family farmers to buyers

    DrumNet uses a text message enabled information system to manage a business network connecting rural smallholder farmers, commercial banks, large-scale buyers of farm products, produce transporters, suppliers of farm products and an army of field agents. DrumNet organizes the farmers into groups which co-guarantee credit and prepay for credit insurance, formalizes commercial relationships between the parties and provides quality controls. This allows participants to focus on their core business.

    For several young participants the AgriHack championship was the high point of the 2013 ICT4Ag International conference cohosted by The Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) and the Rwandan Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI).

    Cette vidéo, réalisée par Inades Formation Burkina, relate l’expérience des communicateurs aux pieds nus, qui encouragent la diffusion d’information en milieu rural, notamment à travers des journaux en langues locales. Ces journaux sont produits par des paysans pour des paysans.

    One of the greatest advances in the struggle for a just and equitable world in the last decade is the successful establishment of an international framework on land tenure. The FAO put together this video of the perspectives of some of the negotiators of the guidelines.

  • Empowering Rural Farmers Using SMS

    Nakaseke Community Telecentre in Uganda has deployed a project called Mfarmer SMS Service to encourage an interactive two way feedback communication to farmers and extension service providers, amongst others. FrontlineSMS is a new innovation technology which is free and open source application used to manage, send and receive SMS. The project is designed to help farmers to access agricultural Market price information, and weather information through their mobile phones.  Last year, 34 Farmers were trained in the application of the service.  To learn more click here .  



The following videos show community radio and participatory video projects based on ComDev methodologies accomplished in Africa. These informative videos demonstrate the effectiveness of participatory communication for rural development. The videos include as well a number of communication experts consultations (2006) that evidence the central role of communication for development in promoting rural development and eradicating food insecurity.
